# Simple patent query overview

The patent query field can be used for performing a simple freestyle text search or a more complex Solr query search.<br>

&#x20;**Note:** *See also* [*Complex Solr search*](/surechembl/text-search/complex-solr-search.md) *for a more advanced query*

The simple freestyle text search provides a way to quickly create a search criteria by entering text that will be searched against the full text of all available patent databases as well as the following bibliographic information: publication number, application number, application dates, priority data, priority dates, IPCR, ECLA or ICO, US classification, assignee or applicant, inventor, and agent.

**Note:** *The default operator in SureChEMBL is* **AND***. If you provide separate terms without an operator (AND, OR, or NOT) between them, SureChEMBL assumes that you are interested in those documents that contain all the listed terms.*

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://chembl.gitbook.io/surechembl/text-search/simple-patent-query-overview.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
